How to Approach People You Haven’t Spoken to in a Long Time

How do you approach people you haven’t spoken to in a long time? What I would have to say is, that can be a real problem if you don’t do it properly.

The most important thing to remember is, don’t get into a long forty minutes or so discussion and then, after all that, by the way I have a new product or business I want to talk to you about.

Three important things here. Remember, number one, get to the point. Number two, be genuine in your compliments. Number three, have integrity.

Let me give you a little example of a script that I might use. “Hey John, Steve Sabo here. Don’t know if you remember put we went to high school together a few years ago.

You’re probably wondering why I’m calling you out of the blue so I hope you don’t mind, I’m going to get right to the point. I got to tell you, I always thought you were sharp and I’m doing this new business and they tell me approach people that you think are sharp.

I think that you’re one of the sharpest, smartest people, frankly, that I knew from back in high school. I thought of you.

I’m going to reach out to you realizing that I may be barking up the wrong tree but it’s worth it to me to at least try and ask you. Would you be at all open to a side project if it didn’t interfere with what you’re currently doing?”

Three things here in summary. Number one, get to the point. Number two, no long catch up and then bring up your business or your opportunity. Number three, doing it this way makes you actually look more sincere by getting right to the point.
